DELINEATE exhibition by Selene States

Martin Hall, Loughborough University Arts, Loughborough, November 2021.
Supported by the Bauhaus University, Loughborough Arts, Arts Council England and MPND Projects.

Commissioned by artist and Bauhaus University pHd candidate Selene Sates, Wilde Studio was commissioned to hand-dye and hand-weave approximately 15m of silk that was transformed into a reproduction of a Bauhaus garment by States. The exhibition DELINEATE was a collection of garments, textiles, furniture and masks from the Bauhaus period that Selene has meticulously recreated from garment patterns from the Bauhaus journal, ‘Die Neue Linie.’ Other contributors to the exhibition include: Jessica Twitchell, Collier and Campbell, Wallace Sewell and Christopher Farr.

‘Delineating the abstract compositions and spatial transformation of the patterns, States’ reproductions highlight how these blueprints of fashion, much like the women of the historical Bauhaus, were excluded from prestige disciplines like architecture and have been relegated from the canon as anonymous ’women’s work.’
